Fluoride Treatments Help Keep The Cavities Away
Now you can get all the great benefits of fluoride in a special treatment at your dentist’s office.
Fluoride is such a good, safe defender against cavities, it's often added to drinking water, toothpaste, and mouth rinses. Fluoride helps teeth resist the acid caused by sugars and by the germs that are in plaque, a film that collects on teeth. It can even reverse early tooth decay. In particular, fluoride helps young children (under age six) develop strong, cavity-resistant permanent teeth.
For patients prone to cavities, your dentist may recommend a special, highly effective fluoride treatment given in the dentist office. This is an inexpensive, painless treatment, and it only takes a few minutes.
Your dentist will apply the fluoride as a solution, foam, or gel, and you will keep it on your teeth for several minutes. For children, the fluoride is usually flavored so it even tastes good. After the waiting time, the fluoride is rinsed out of your mouth. To make sure your teeth absorb the fluoride, your dentist may ask you to not rinse your mouth, drink, or eat for about a half hour.
